mutable objects

Some objects clearly address the fear of commitment typical of our times. They are objects we can reshape or reconfigure. These mutable objects will always give us options.

The Jojo candlestick and bud vase, designed by Anthony Di Bitonto, is a true construction toy in which mutability is achieved through modularity. Each of the anodized aluminum candle holders is in fact an independent module that snaps and hinges onto the next.

The parts, which come in different heights, can be built upon both vertically and horizontally. At any time, a piece can be detached to serve in a different area of the home. With the addition of a simple glass tube, each pieces also becomes a bud vase.

As if made of a new kind of metal clay, the shape of Giovanni Pellone's Mutant vase gently changes under your fingers, from straight, to gentle curves, to energetic waves. In this case, we went as far as declining to give the object a final shape, which is instead determined by the whim of the individual.

This amazing ability to mutate is achieved by locking a large steel coil (actually the world largest Slinky®) between the extremities of an aluminum vase. The Mutant can hold water and flowers, while its wriggling coil allows you to change it's shape at any time.
